Greece on Strike

—————–
'It's not just Greece. The reason we have seen a global movement erupt is because capitalism is an international system, and it's doing the same thing to all of us, everywhere. What was done to the Third World in terms of structural adjustment is now being done to the working classes in advanced capitalist societies. What is being done to Greece is being rolled out across Europe.'

Occupy movement in New Mexico finds new name out of respect for Native Americans
The `Occupy' movement has emphasized its opposition to those in the top 1 percent of the country's income distribution, as well as the financial sector, which in recent decades has drastically increased its share of the total national income. But this emphasis has meant that many other societal tensions and grievances that have traditionally preoccupied left-wing and anti-establishment movements, such as those of the Native American community and other racial minorities, have not been a significant focus of the '99 percenters.'

D.C. labor and Occupy unite
The final stop for Occupy protesters on the labor march was the janitors' protest. There, activists expressed solidarity with the workers and invited the workers to join them in their occupation. THIS WAS an important step in the local Occupy movement. Following the tense scene in Manhattan last week that concluded with a victory against the threatened eviction of protesters in Zuccotti Park, a new jolt of energy and determination fueled the movement in the lead-up to Saturday's global day of action.

 BEYOND OWS: INTERNATIONAL

EGYPT: Egyptian activists post wills on Twitter
The effort, which has spread to Facebook, is called Martyrs in Demand: Write your own will against the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. The idea arose after Mina Daniel, a Coptic Christian activist, was shot in the chest Oct. 9. His will asked that his body be carried through Tahrir. Mourners honored the wish, marching his coffin from the morgue through the busy square and toward the graveyard. Thousands of people turned out for Daniel's vigil, and for the funeral processions of other fallen protesters.

EGYPT: Jailed Egyptian blogger on hunger strike says 'he is ready to die'
‎"If the militarists thought that I would be tired of my hunger strike and accept imprisonment and enslavement, then they are dreamers," said Maikel Nabil Sanad, in a statement announcing that he would boycott the latest court case against him, which began on Tuesday. "It's more honourable [for] me to die committing suicide than [it is] allowing a bunch of Nazi criminals to feel that they succeeded in restricting my freedom. I am bigger than that farce."

GREECE: Greece hit with another strike, more protests
In Athens, thousands of workers, not all of them from the unions, poured into the streets, marching on Parliament, where lawmakers have begun debating the latest round of austerity measures, including a rash of tax hikes and wage and salary cuts for 2011 and 2012.

LEBANON: Teachers Move Ahead with Strike
Teachers in private and public schools carried out their strike on Wednesday protesting the "humiliating" deal that was made between the General Labor Confederation (GLC), the cabinet and the Economic Committees last week.

PALESTINE: Freed Palestinians reunite with families in Gaza and West Bank
One former prisoner said he did not understand "why the whole world stood up for Shalit even though his job was to come and kill our people". But Palestinians at the rally to welcome the prisoners home were not unsympathetic to what the Israeli, who was 19 when he was captured, has endured over the past five years. Nariman Shubair said she did not regard the holding of Shalit as personal. "Israel left the Palestinians no way to release the prisoners other than to take him. It wouldn't have taken so long to get him released if the Israelis had let our prisoners go," she said. "This was the only way to change anything. Negotiations do nothing."

YEMEN: Reports of more deaths in Yemeni protest
Witnesses say forces loyal to President Saleh fired on protesters, killing at least seven in capital, Sanaa.

 CONTEXT & ANALYSIS

LENIN'S TOMB: Greece on the brink
It's not just Greece. The reason we have seen a global movement erupt is because capitalism is an international system, and it's doing the same thing to all of us, everywhere. What was done to the Third World in terms of structural adjustment is now being done to the working classes in advanced capitalist societies. What is being done to Greece is being rolled out across Europe.

Freedom Rider: Iran in Obama's Cross Hairs | Black Agenda Report
While the nation's attention has been focused on the Occupy Wall Street movement, new dangers for this country and for the world have been created by the Obama administration. The president has made it clear that America's interventionist path has not changed direction one bit. If anything, he has done what once would have seemed impossible, accelerating that direction more than his predecessor ever hoped.

A victory for the outraged
On October 15, 2011, slightly fewer than one million people took to the streets. Nevertheless, it was a huge victory, because it was the first large demonstration carried out in a 24-hour period around the planet against the people responsible for the capitalist crisis, which has created tens of millions of victims.

The promise of Occupy
Occupy is helping to build a new left on a scale unseen in the U.S. in the last 40 years -- one that's rooted in the working class.

Occupy Wall Street: What You Can Demand versus What You Must DO | Glen Ford
Since it is patently clear that plutocrats and democracy cannot coexist, the project is to rid us of the plutocrats, while there's still time to save our world. Once that's understood, the rest is in the details.

Memorials and Spectacles: The Anti-Dr. King Monument | Glen Ford
‎So by the time the corporate sponsors spoke themselves and after all the choirs sang all we are left with is a memorial that will permanently impose itself, as spectacle, preventing actual discussion of the man or his ideas. In fact, the words "Black" and "racism" make zero appearances at a memorial dedicated to a man who spoke of the essentialness of Black pride and an end to White supremacist notions of race.
