Nepal Maoist-Madhesi government an opportunist alliance: Khanal

Chairman Jhalanath Khanal of United Marxist Leninists Party while addressing a program in Kathmandu, Saturday September 17, 2011 said that the Nepal Maoist-Madhesi coalition government is basically the alliance between opportunists from the extreme right and extreme left camps.

The four point deal that took shape in the midnight is mysterious and deplorable too. Unless the deal is scrapped, neither will the peace nor constitution drafting processes will move forward, said Khanal in a blunt manner.

The major parties need to sit together to resolve five contentious issues such as Modality, set the standard, number to be integrated, hierarchy and rehabilitation of PLA integration, also said the erstwhile Prime Minister.

We are in the opposition but we will continue to support the government on the merit basis, Khanal said.

All is not well when one is not in power. The 12 point disease.

KATHMANDU, Sept 18: Terming the Bhattarai-led government as an opportunist coalition, CPN-UML Chairman and former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal on Saturday claimed that the current government would not succeed in concluding the peace process and writing the new constitution.

There are serious doubts if this opportunist coalition will succeed in taking the political course to its destination, said Khanal at a press meet organized at the party head office in Balkhu Sunday.

He claimed only a consensus government would be able to accomplish the twin tasks.

Stating that the UCPN (Maoist) is a major stakeholder in the peace process, Khanal said the party should come up with concrete proposal on the peace process and demonstrate flexibility. Maoists should come up with concrete proposal with regard to resolving the remaining contentious issues of the peace process, he said.

Khanal also claimed that Prime Minister Bhattarai had failed to keep his words and criticized the government for transferring the home secretary. The prime minister had earlier assured that the government would not transfer top bureaucrats for at least a month.

The transfer of home secretary has posed a serious question as to which power centre influenced him, he said.
