Reviews

Nirode Mohanty's work, " RADICALISM IN ISLAM: Resurgence and Ramifications" is a wide-ranging study on the relationship between radical Islam and contemporary technology, and a warning, based upon a plethora of sources, of the dangers that the convergence between extremism and lethality pose to the world. Seeing the issue in a teleological manner, Mohanty takes the reader back through Muslim history in order to demonstrate the deep basis for various extremist ideologies, but concentrates upon the contemporary period. His documentation is immense, and numerous little-known radical movements are detailed, woven together in a fine tapestry that leads inexorably to the point that so many fear: what will happen when radical Muslims obtain weapons of mass destruction? Mohanty, however, does not stop there, but gives us positive recommendations about how to deal with this issue, both with regard to state players (such as Pakistan, whose nuclear weapons technology is in danger of falling into the hands of radicals) as well as non-state players. This book should be read by those concerned by the critical security issues of today, and wish to understand the dangerous world in which we live."--- David Cook, Professor of Religious Studies, Rice University, Author of "Understanding Jihad," "Martyrdom in Islam" and "Understanding Suicide Attacks" (among other works).

An excellent book that gives the reader a well-researched, balanced, and vital data about the topic of Radical Islam. I strongly recommend this book for those who want to understand the problem of Islamic Radicalism.----Dr.Tawfik Hamid, a former member of the Islamic radical group Jamma Islamiya, now an Islamic reformer and a senior fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.
I am impressed by the depth of author's knowledge that flows far outside of what is normally seen in a book on terrorism. He has presented some extremely sensible arguments that will help readers not only to understand the threat but also will assist the policy-makers to formulate practical policies. --- Dipak K. Gupta , a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science at San Diego State University and the Fred J. Hansen Professor of Peace Studies, Author of Understanding Terrorism and Political Violence: The Life Cycle of Birth, Growth, Transformation, and Demise. Routledge, London (2008). and Who Are The Terrorists? Philadelphia, PA.: Chelsea House Publishing. 2006.

During the past decade, tens of thousands of innocent civilians were slaughtered throughout the world in the name of Islam, triggering a heated debate whether these represented the isolated acts of fringe extremist groups or a wider jihadist strategy in accordance with Islam's fundamental precepts. In this book, Nirode Mohanty offers a fresh and much-needed perspective on the inter-relationship between Islam and political violence, and one that weaves together millenarian yearnings and beliefs with twenty-first century operational methods and high technologies.---Efraim Karsh, Professor of Middle East & Mediterranean Studies, King's College, London, Editor, The Middle East Quarterly; Author, Islamic imperialism: A HistoryYale, 2006).
In his comprehensive analysis of Jihadism and Islamism, RADICALISM IN ISLAM: Resurgence and RamificationsNirode Mohanty offers readers a full view of the debate on a subject which is impacting international relations and security for many years to come. By defining concepts such as Islamism, Islamophobia, Jihad, by factoring them within the technological and educational equations and by explaining the geopolitical challenges facing many regions in the world, particularly south Asia, Mohanty advances Jihadism studies academically while making his findings easy to read for the public .--- Walid Phares, Professor of Global Strategies and author of The Confrontation: Winning the War Against Future Jihad( Palgrave Macmillan, 2008)The War of Ideas: Jihadism against Democracy( Palgrave-Macmillan, 2006)
