Attack on Save Sharmila Jan Caravan- over 40 Activists Arrested

Attack on Save Sharmila Jan Caravan- over 40 Activists Arrested

Over 25 organisations from across the country including NAPM, Asha Parivar, COVA, J&K RTI Movement, PEACE, Save Democracy Repeal AFSPA Group and others have launched a Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign to highlight the peaceful struggle of Irom Sharmila who has been on a hunger strike for the past 11 years for the repeal of AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) from the Northeast. The Jan Caravan was flagged off from Srinagar in Kashmir on 16th October 2011 by Medha Patkar. Mr. Singhjeet, brother of Ms. Sharmila is one of the Campaigners on the March. After covering Jammu, Ludhiana, Karnal and Panipat the Campaigners reached Delhi on 19thOctober 2011.

A Rally was being taken out at 3 pm from the Arts Faculty Gate of Delhi University North Campus by students, faculty members and activists from different parts of the country when members of rights groups blocked the road and attacked the Caravan. Instead of arresting those who were disrupting and preventing the rally, the police arrested over 40 members of the Caravan and students who had the required permission for the rally and took them to the police station and released them late in the evening.

Members of the Save Sharmila Campaign are considering to move the National Human Rights Commission against the failure of the police to provide protection to the Marchers who were taking out a peaceful rally with due permission and highhanded, undemocratic and biased action of the police in arresting the Marchers instead of taking action against those who were disrupting the Rally and causing trouble.

The Jan Caravan will continue and after covering Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna, Ranchi, Kolkotta and Guwahati will reach Imphal on 26th October 2011.
