Anti-Modi top cop Sanjiv Bhatt gets bail

, TNN | Oct 17, 2011, 02.44PM IST
AHMEDABAD: Seventeen days after he was arrested, Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt got bail from a local court in Ahmedabad on Monday. Bhatt had been jailed for allegedly fabricating evidence to show that he was at the crucial meeting held at chief minister Narendra Modi's home on February 27, 2002, in which Modi had allegedly told cops to go easy on rioters.

Bhatt walked out of the Sabarmati jail just hours after the court granted the bail to him.

While addressing the mediapersons, Bhatt said he was glad that the rule of law had prevailed, adding that it was a victory for the victims of Gujarat riots.

Bhatt was given bail by session judge V K Vyas on the condition that he would remain present when called for and would cooperate in the investigation. In his 30-page long order, the judge said that the behaviour of the complainant was unnatural.

Police constable KD Pant had filed an FIP accusing Bhatt of threatening him and forcing him to file a fake affidavit stating he had taken Bhatt to the chief minister's bungalow on February 27, 2002. The cop was then arrested on September 30.

On October 3, Bhatt moved a bail plea which the government opposed.

Bhatt's lawyer told the court during the hearing that the arrest had been made only so that the government could get evidence about the 2002 riots that the cop had collected against the government. Advocate I H Syed alleged the government aimed to destroy the evidence.
