Social Leaders Charged over Anti-India Speeches

December 2nd, 2010

A case of sedition has been registered by Delhi police on Monday against prominent writer and social activist Arundhati Roy, Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, revolutionary poet Varavara Rao and others on charges of giving "anti-India" speeches at a convention in Kashmir last month.

The filing of the FIR came following a directive from a local court on Saturday, on a petition filed by

Sushil Pandit, who alleged that Geelani and Roy made anti-India speeches at a conference on "Azadi-the Only Way" on October 21. With the case having been registered, the police have initiated investigations after obtaining footage of the speeches made at the convention by the people in question.

Dharmendra Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) said, "We will closely examine the speeches and file a report in the court by January 6, 2011 (the next date of hearing)," reported the Hindu.

"Roy and others were charged under sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between classes), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of peace) and 505 (false statement, rumour circulated with intent to cause mutiny or offence against public peace."

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said "The language used certainly threatens the constitutional integrity of the country."

"Pity the nation that has to silence its writers for speaking their minds, Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. It is a historical fact. Even the Indian government has accepted this." Ms. Roy said in a statement from Srinagar when the government was contemplating actions against her.

"Pity the nation that needs to jail those who ask for justice while communal killers, mass murderers, looters, rapists, and those who prey on the poorest of the poor, roam free," she further added.

Jammu and Kashmir, known for its scenic beauty has been a victim of prolonged political rows between India and Pakistan since 1947 over the supposed "ownership" of the state between the two countries. Both the countries have only shown their national interest towards the state and not taken into account the interest and welfare of the people in Jammu & Kashmir.

The Central government has not taken any concrete action over the recent disputes in the valley despite innumerable pleas by Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.
