Baramulla, Dec 12: Protests broke out on Sunday afternoon in Khanpora locality of north Kashmir's Baramulla district following the arrest of two youth on charges of stone pelting.
They have been identified as Muhammad Usman Teli and Muddasir Ahmad Kumar.
As the police conducted raids, the locals of Khanpora offered resistance to avoid the arrest of the youth. However, police used force and fired several tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
Soon after the arrests, scores of men, women and children took to streets on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway and staged demonstrations.
Chanting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, the protesters said that the boys were innocent. The protesters blocked the highway due to which hundreds of vehicles remained stranded.
"My son was arrested outside a Masjid," Aqib's mother Gulashan told Greater Kashmir.   She reiterated that her son was innocent. "His arrest is unwarranted," she added.
Police however said there were no protests in the area. "I have no information about any such arrests," said Station House Officer (SHO) Baramulla, Pralad Sharma.
